Water woes for county householders

Galway County Council were forced to extend water restrictions at night in locations across the county last week in order to allow reservoir levels to recover.

As the last preparations for Christmas got into full swing on Thursday last, many householders and businesses in the county faced water supply problems which have been caused by the severe weather conditions and a surge in demand.

In a bid to alleviate the situation, the council put out water tankers and stand pipes at various locations to help consumers who were without water in their homes. Water restrictions at night were also continued so that supply throughout the day was maintained.

The areas affected by the water restrictions last week included Tonabrucky, Forramoyle, Barna, Moycullen, Oughterard, Moylough, Ballinastack, Springlawn, and Treasna. There were also reports of water supply problems in Maree, Oranmore, Athenry, Ballinasloe town, Gort, Tuam, Claregalway, Renville, Portumna, Spiddal, and Woodford.

The council have said that the biggest problem for consumers was frozen service pipes and that the only way they could assist was to provide locations where water could be accessed.
