The Union of Students in Ireland, in conjunction with the European Commission’s ‘For Diversity, Against Discrimination’ campaign, have announced the launch of Diversity Week.
The campaign, which will run from November 3 to 6, will seek to raise awareness on campus of the issues surrounding diversity and discrimination as well as encouraging students to be aware of their rights and responsibilities under Irish Equality Law.
“The USI/EC Diversity campaign will reach over 200,000 students around the country and will encourage them to embrace diversity in their college and later in the working environments,” said GMIT welfare officer Conor Moylan. “Many students are unaware of their rights and responsibilities in relation to anti-discrimination issues so we have teamed up with the European Commission to address this issue of hosting Ireland’s first Diversity Week among second level students in Ireland.”
The FDAD campaign is run by the European Commission and aims to inform people about their rights and obligations under EU-wide anti-discrimination legislation in relation to the five grounds of discrimination: racial or ethnic origin, sexual orientation, religion or belief, disability, and age. Each day of Diversity Week will focus on one of these specific five areas.
