New shopping centre given final go-ahead

The final go-head has been given to developers to complete the much anticipated Galway Shopping Centre facelift which is to cost up to €140 million.

Galway City Council gave the final approval recently for the revamp to the shopping centre on the Headford Road. However, they attached 67 conditions. Developers must also first pay a €3.3 million contribution to the council before any construction work begins.

The application, made by Lindat Limited, was for the demolition of the existing shopping centre and associated structures to make way for the construction of a mixed use urban development. It will be constructed on a phased basis and will consist of four separate blocks totalling 85,618 sqm floor area. This will incorporate retail/commercial uses, residential units (228 apartments ), restaurant, leisure and municipal art gallery arranged around a new public street. There will be four main anchor stores and 91 retail/commercial units on two levels. There will also be a multi-storey car parking facility spread over three levels.
