Mums clock up the most mileage when it comes to their children’s academic and social lives, an AA Membership survey of more than 2,400 parents with children under the age of 12 has revealed.
Two thirds of mums, many of whom liken themselves to a shuttle service, said they do the lion’s share of giving their children lifts. However just 20 per cent of dads surveyed said they fulfil this same responsibility.
In keeping with this trend, 64 per cent of mums surveyed by AA Membership said they drive their children somewhere at least once a day, while just 31 per cent of dads said the same. This figure is even lower among Dublin dads with just a quarter saying they do the chore daily. Nationally nine per cent of dads admitted to seldom or never giving their children a lift compared with four per cent of mums.
The taxi services of grandparents are also in demand with 13 per cent of parents stating that grandparents regularly gave their children lifts. Others who frequently take on the role include the parent of a child’s friend, a family friend, and au-pairs.
AA Membership also can reveal that just seven per cent of parents nationally participate in car pooling on a regular basis. This figure drops to just three per cent in Dublin.
