Galway business Bookkeeping Partners (BKP ), is urging fellow business owners to remember the less fortunate in the run up to the holiday season. BKP give one euro for every hour they bill to their Charity of the Year. “We find this a great way to donate as the amount we give is directly linked to our turnover,” explains Deirdre Geraghty, owner of BKP, “and as we donate monthly, it’s a little easier on the cashflow than trying to find a lump sum at year end.”
“It’s a very tough time for everyone but Charities are finding it exceptionally hard to survive” explained Ms Geraghty. “Financial support from the Government is constantly being cut and fund-raising has become extremely difficult. I realise money is tight for everyone right now but we need to remember that these Charities look after our communities and we all avail of their services at some time, either directly or through our families and friends.”
According to Business in the Community Ireland, community and voluntary organisations in Ireland received almost €20 million in support from the Business Community in 2009. Ms Geraghty states, “You can see from this figure the huge impact that businesses have on these not for profit organisations and how many simply would not exist without our help. I urge all business owners to look at their budgets for next year and if possible, set up a regular monthly donation, regardless of how small it is.”
Galway Rape Crisis Centre was chosen as BKP’s Charity of the Year. Executive Director, Aoibheann McCann comments, “Receiving regular monthly donations is incredibly helpful to us as normally we can’t predict when we will receive donations and we often find ourselves with a shortfall of funds. We are extremely grateful to the business community for their help.”
