Kavanagh faces lay-off with ankle surgery

Shane Kavanagh (right ), who captained the Galway hurlers to the league title last May and throughout the championship from full-back, is expected to miss part of next season as he recovers from an ankle operation.

Kavanagh’s likely absence will be a huge blow to Galway’s league ambitions for 2011, as the Kinvara clubman was a tower of strength at full-back all season. He was considered by many pundits to have been very unfortunate not to have collected an All-Star statuette for his displays.

The 27-years-old is scheduled to undergo surgery tomorrow (Friday ) on an ongoing ankle problem.

In the worst case scenario Kavanagh’s recovery could take up to four or five months and that could leave him struggling to be back to full match fitness for the championship.

Galway’s football captain Michael Meehan is also struggling to get back to full fitness following knee and ankle injuries, and as a result he is not expected to be available for Galway’s opening league games. His absence would be a big loss and all Galway GAA supporters will be very eager to see both men back in the county colours as soon as possible.
