Crowe confirms Corrib Park pitches funding secure

Despite funding for many sports projects around the country being withdrawn, funding for the Westside pitch upgrading, all weather surface, and a playground in Corrib Park is secure.

The Mayor of Galway Michael J Crowe confirmed this week that the funding has not been withdrawn. The news comes following meetings with the Department of the Environment by the Mayor, Councillor Ollie Crowe, and Galway City Council officials.

“There was every possibility that it would be withdrawn and there was considerable doubt about the funding because the project has not yet started,” said Mayor Crowe. “This has happened to many projects around the country and I was fearful for this project.”

The funding is €150,000 towards the all weather facility and €30,000 for the playground. Corrib Rangers has also raised money to bring the total package to more than €300,000.

While the funding has been included in the estimates for the Department of the Environment, the Mayor said: “We need to ensure that the works commence as early as possible in 2011, to make certain that we receive the funds.”

Mayor Crowe said he will “continue to work to ensure all the relevant remaining procedures are processed speedily and efficiently”.

He said Corrib Rangers have shown “great forbearance during the last few years” and the club, along with the local community, “deserve to see this project commence as soon as possible”.
