A major search of Galway’s waterways was under way this week following reports that a woman had fallen into the river.
Search crews were organised on Tuesday night when the woman, a 26-year-old Mayo native who has been living in Galway for some time, disappeared close to the Salmon Weir Bridge. It is believed she may have fallen into the river.
Gardaí, Galway fire brigade, the Galway Lifeboat, and a Coastguard helicopter began trawling the area shortly after 9pm on Tuesday, but there was no sign of the woman and the search was later stood down for the night.
The operation resumed on Wednesday with a Coastguard helicopter carrying out an aerial survey of the river and nearby coastline while searches continued on the ground.
Gardaí have appealed to members of the public to keep an eye out for the woman, who was last seen wearing jeans and a black jacket. She is five feet nine inches tall, of medium build, has dark hair, and wears glasses.
