Competition: A Year till Sunday released on DVD

Nobody really likes to be reminded of the rapid passing of time. When Pat Comer made his wonderful behind the scenes documentary, A year till Sunday on Galway’s All-Ireland victory of 1998, DVDs were as rare as hen’s teeth.

The cassette version has been well utilised in many GAA houses over the past decade and it has recently been re-released in DVD form.

For the uninitiated, and there is a whole generation of teenagers who know nothing of the film, Pat Comer was the sub goal-keeper on the Galway panel in 1998 after giving years of exemplary service as Galway’s number one between the posts.

A film director and story teller, Pat was granted unrestricted access with his camera for the entire championship season of 1998, from Tuam Stadium to Croke Park.

The documentary was described by Irish Times journalist Tom Humphries as the “first great GAA film” and by well known GAA writer and broadcaster, Liam Horan as “a film that gets deep into the dressingroom”.

The DVD is currently available in the usual outlets and would make a perfect Christmas gift for those who have had their fill of NAMA, the IMF, and austerity cuts for a while, and would like to wallow in some comforting nostalgia.
