New artist in residence at Galway Arts Centre

MAJELLA DOWDICAN, an honours degree graduate in fine art from the GMIT, has been appointed as the new artist in residence at the Galway Arts Centre in Dominick Street.

This residency has been made possible by the Galway city and county arts offices and the Galway Arts Centre. The artist will be moving into her studio space, located in the centre.

“Work space is so important to an artist,” she said. “Many artists try to work from their home but it’s very difficult to do. An artist, like any other job, needs the work space to be able to divide home and work. I never thought I had a chance of getting it but I’m so thrilled to have got this opportunity.”

For the next six months she is looking forward to making the most of her residency at the Galway Arts Centre and receiving advice from the centre’s visual art co-ordinator, Maeve Mulrennan.

Majella is originally from Kinlough, Co Leitrim, and moved to Galway four years ago. One of her future aims is to do a master’s in fine art in London.
