THE ONLY piano recital in this year’s Music For Galway season takes place on Tuesday at 8pm in the Aula Maxima, NUI Galway, with the great Chinese pianist Jue Wang.
Jue Wang has been described by The Independent as “the most exciting young pianist yet to emerge from China” and he will open the concert with Ravel’s ‘Sonatine’ and ‘Miroirs’. In ‘Miroirs’, Ravel constructed five movements, each dedicated to a certain person. In the second half, audiences will hear two of the best-loved and most popular works by Brahms; the ‘Three Intermezzi, Op 117’ and his Hungarian Dances.
Wang’s first public performance was at the age of 10. In the same year he took part in an international music competition, the VII Stravinsky International Piano Competition. In 2001, aged 17, he won the Gold Medal of the First Chinese Young Artist Competition.
At present he is studying at the Manhattan School of Music under Dr Marc Silverman in the artist diploma program. In 2008 Wang was the Gold Medal Winner of the 16th Paloma O’Shea Santander International Piano Competition in Spain, leading to a tour of the world’s major concert halls.
Tickets are €20/16/6 from Music for Galway (091 - 705962, [email protected] ), Opus II the Cornstore, or www.tht.ie
