Flaherty Markets commenced trading in 1971 at the Long Walk in the city centre. As part of its expansion a branch was opened in Castlebar, Co Mayo, in 1996 as Mayo Electrical Supplies. In 2001 the Galway business moved to Ballybane Industrial Estate and nearly five years ago there was yet another expansion on the 30,000sq ft site with the opening of The Lighthouse adjacent to the main building.
The Lighthouse carries an extensive range of quality lighting for indoor and outdoor purposes and a range of kitchen and other domestic appliances. Also provided is a lighting design service for commercial and industrial projects.
Speaking about The Lighthouse Michael Maurice Flaherty said: “We saw a niche in the market as there were many customers coming in and enquiring about lighting. We had the expertise here already so it just went from there.”
Flaherty Markets stocks every type of bulb imaginable including all updated LED bulbs which has proven popular with customers endeavouring to be more energy efficient. There is also an assortment of finishes for sockets and for switches, including brass and steel. The store stocks many decorative features for renovating the kitchen and sitting rooms, and there is a large range of heating products for the house including storage and panel heating.
“We have a lot of trade and DIY people coming in here and our staff would be able to advise them on what products to use if they are unaware of what is out there in the market,” said Mr Flaherty, who added that Flaherty Markets also has a large well stocked warehouse and commercial unit for the trade customer.
