Buy a light on hospital Christmas tree and remember a loved one

People are being urged to remember their loved ones by supporting a unique fundraising venture.

By sponsoring a light on University Hospital Galway’s Christmas tree the public can help fund the workings of the facility’s Children’s Remembrance Day Committee.

Margaret Duignan, the chairperson of the committee, says the tree brings solace and peace to patients, staff and visitors to the hospital each year.

“The lights cost €5 and will be available to the general public on Wednesday November 24 2010 for two weeks from 9am to 8pm at the lift lobby, University Hospital Galway. It is advisable to come early to avoid disappointment.”

Susan Massey of the Children’s Remembrance Day Committee says the Christmas tree lights are a unique gift.

“A Christmas card is given for each light sponsored, which may be sent to relatives at home or abroad or to the family of a deceased relative or friend. This year’s Christmas card was designed by Caoimhe Conneely in memory of her grandparents.”

Ann Cosgrove, services manager at Galway University Hospitals, [UHG and Merlin Park] launched this year’s Christmas cards and lights.

The tree lights will be switched on on Sunday December 12. All those who sponsor lights are included in a triduum of Masses and an ecumenical prayer service celebrated over the Christmas at UHG’s hospital chapel.
