Gardai back poker challenge for charity

A group of 20 Galway gardaí are joining the public in a ‘poker run challenge by car’ on Sunday in aid of UNICEF.

The UNICEF Poker Run 2010 will see teams enter their vehicle of choice into the competition, aiming to solve clues in five locations across Galway city and county.

At each location teams will receive a poker card and, at the end of the event, the team with the ‘best hand’ will win the grand prize of €1,000.

All proceeds will go directly to UNICEF, which saves and protects the lives of children around the world who are not lucky enough to be able to help themselves.

The event will begin at Supermac’s, Headford Road, on Sunday at 11am with an entry fee of €50 per vehicle.

Garda Leo Kiernan of Galway Garda Station, who is organising the poker run event, says all money will go to a great cause.

“I went to South Africa last year, saw UNICEF’s work on the ground, and experienced first hand the difference the charity makes to people's lives.I feel it is very important for me to do my bit in raising money for this brilliant cause. Having children really brings the matter home. People's support for this event will be very much appreciated.''
