Chris Potter, the man The Guardian described him as “one of the best saxophonists on the planet” is coming west to play The Galway Jazz Festival.
The Galway Jazz Festival takes place from Thursday November 18 to Sunday 21 and will see concerts from Mary Coughlan, the Pascal Schumacher Quartet, Ian Shaw & Phil Ware Trio, Ibrahim Electric Trio, and the Aengus Hackett Quartet.
The festival will open with a tribute to trumpeter John Merrick of the West Coast Big Band by The Galway West Coast and the Black Magic Big Band while singer Mary Coughlan will perform two intimate concerts in The Crane Bar.
Nuns Island will resonate with the melodic sounds of Luxembourg’s vibraphonist Pascal Schumacher and his quartet. He will be joined by Christophe Devisscher (bass ), Florian Weber (piano ), and Jens Düppe (drums ).
The same venue will also host leaders of the piano trio Phil Ware Trio featuring pianist Phil Ware, bassist Phil Redmond, drummer Kevin Brady, and the two time winner of the BBC Jazz Award for best vocalist, Ian Shaw.
Monroe’s Live will host Danish group Ibrahim Electric, who are regarded as Europe’s funkiest organ trio. TrioVD from Leeds will be in The Crane Bar on Saturday.
Closing the festival in the Radisson Live Lounge is Chris Potter’s Underground from New York. Potter, who has worked with Steely Dan, will be joined on the night by Adam Rogers (guitar ) and Craig Taborn (Fender Rhodes ).
There will also be a free jazz trail through Busker Browne’s, Tigh Neachtains, Café 8, House Hotel, Artisan, and Morgan’s Bar, and the Hotel Meyrick will be the free festival club.
