The annual Jimmy Cranny swim meet, hosted by Galway SC, produced an impressive and stylish day’s swimming of which Jimmy Cranny, the club’s founding father, would have been proud.
With 69 swimmers competing for the club in this year’s competition which was attended by teams from the Connacht region, Galway swimmers showed some early season form with more than 125 personal best times achieved from 200 swims.
The meet was good preparation for the swimmers, some of whom compete in the junior Connacht Autumn 100-400 series in Longford on Saturday, before the Connacht minor schools and the seniors competing at the Irish Short Course championships, which for the first time in more than 20 years will be hosted by Leisureland next week.
In the u-9 50m there were podium finishes for Roisin Finn, Liam Smyth, Owen Moore and finalist places for Eve Quane, Sophie Moran, Madeleine Mitchell, Cian Raftery, Joesph Doorly, Anna Coyne and Daragh Hanrahan.
In the u-10 50m there were podium finishes for Sinead Carey and Tim Keogh with finalist places for Lauren Walsh, Harry McGrogan and David O’Connor.
Kate Finn, Emer Claffey, Andrew Moore, Bryan O’Sullivan and David Knight were in the medals in the u-12 200m events, while Rachel Moore, Fiona Staunton, Keena Walsh, Ruth Keogh and Katie McKnight showed strength and depth by dominating the top places across the five events in the girls’ u-14 events. Oisin Duffy finished second and third in the 200 backstroke and 200 breaststroke.
Saoirse McGrath, Ciara Naughton, David O’Sullivan, Jack Keogh, Cian Duffy and Conor Smyth produced some excellent individual swims at u-16 level, while Dairne Ryan and Kevin McGlade put in promising swims and podium finishes in their open events.
