A Galway woman, who is currently being detained in Surinam for alleged drug offences, had a bench warrant issued against her at Galway District Court this week in the event she comes back to Ireland.
Nicola Black (23 ) with an address at 83 Droim Chaoin, Rahoon, was due to appear in Galway District Court last Monday to answer charges of drink driving and dangerous driving at Quincentenary Bridge, Galway, on March 17, 2008. However, Inspector Ernie White informed the court that her appearance had been hampered by the fact that Black is currently being detained in Surinam for drugs matters.
Judge Mary Fahy conceded to the request by the inspector to issue a bench warrant but added that it would be unlikely that Black would be extradited from Surinam for these charges.
According to reports earlier this year, Black had been arrested in the Republic of Suriname after she was found with cocaine. It is alleged that two packages of cocaine had been strapped to Black’s thighs when she tried to board a Dutch-bound flight at the Suriname airport. Her mother, Maureen Black, went public with the situation in May of this year in an effort to get diplomatic help.
Nicola Black is the sister of Una Black who was jailed this year for the manslaughter of her neighbour, John Malone, at Walter Macken Flats in Mervue in December 2006. According to reports at the time Malone was stabbed during a drunken row over a dog.
