Action must be taken over city’s abandoned horses says Ó Brolcháin

A licensing system and a register of horses is badly needed with the marked increase in the number of abandoned horses across the city.

This is the view of Green senator Niall Ó Brolcháin who is calling on the Galway City Council to introducing such a bylaw under the Control of Horses Act.

Sen Ó Brolcháin was reacting to concerns which have been raised about the numbers of horses left “starving and abandoned in fields close to housing estates” in the city.

“Action must be taken to prevent horses being left without adequate food and water,” he said. “The horses would not survive without the kindness of strangers. This is a very serious animal welfare issue but at the moment there is no-one to assist with the matter.”
