Mutton Island lighthouse to shine again as new museum

For the first time in 30 years, the Mutton Island lighthouse will shine a light onto Galway Bay, as electricity is installed in the iconic structure.

The lighthouse is currently being refurbished and renovated for use as a museum and it is expected that the light will be operational within the coming weeks.

The Galway City Council’s heritage officer Jim Higgins is currently overseeing the project and the Commission of Irish Lights has provided lighthouse keeper uniforms and other artefacts for display in the lighthouse.

Mr Higgins is currently seeking to acquire both 19th century furniture for one room of the lighthouse and 1970s furniture for another to give an idea of how it looked inside in its heyday and in the years before it was closed down.
