Extensive road works will be carried out at Birchall, Oughterard, on a section of road adjacent to Lough Corrib which experienced severe flooding last year.
The works will involve the raising of the existing roadway to compensate for any future flooding. The works are funded under the OPW Flood relief programme. The work was deemed necessary as a number of families were unable to access their properties due to the extent of the flooding.
News of the works have been welcomed by Independent councillor Thomas Welby. “The householders on this road had to suffer severe hardship at the height of the flooding last year,” he said, “and these works will ensure that this situation will not arise again.”
