Further remand for man arrested as part of Operation Foolscap

One of the men arrested as part of Operation Foolscap, the biggest investigation into organised crime in the west, was further remanded on continuing bail following an alleged assault on Halloween night which resulted in his being hospitalised and unable to attend court.

The Galway District Court heard on Monday how Joseph Crawford had been unable to attend the court sitting due to an assault which took place the previous night. Defence solicitor Tomas McHale explained that his client had been taken to casualty to be treated for “significant injuries” sustained in the alleged incident.

The 25-year-old accused with an address at 47 Corrach Bui, Rahoon, is charged with entering Kostello’s in Knocknacarra as a tresspasser to commit burglary on March 21, 2010, contrary to Section 12 of the Criminal Justice (Theft and Fraud ) Act.

Judge Mary Fahy remanded Crawford, in his absence, on continuing bail to appear at Galway District Court again on January 24, 2011, for DPP directions.
