Re-imagining those old, familiar, places

YOU VISIT places every day. You walk in the city, you might take a stroll through a park, you might even visit fantastic landscapes when you play your computer games.

Sometimes you might begin to think they are all a little too familiar, no matter how much you like them. In such cases it might be a good idea to see them from a completely different perspective, get a fresh angle on them, and in the process learn to appreciate them all over again.

These are some of the ideas behind The View From Here, an exhibition of new video works by the artist Jennifer Brady which will be officially opened this Saturday at 5pm in the 126 Gallery, Queen Street, as part of the TULCA festival of visual art.

Brady’s works explore the everyday spaces we inhabit from radical and fantastical perspectives. The works address notions of place, using documentary styles, narrative devices, voice-over, soundtracks, conspiracy theory, video gaming, and virtual landscapes.

These elements seek to re-imagine the city, public parks, and computer gaming landscapes. The stories she tells through her video works are based on research into both real and fictive events. The material is used to construct narratives which in turn explores both reality and fiction.

The exhibition runs until November 21. The artist will also give a public talk about her work (with Chris Fite-Wassilak ) in 126 on Tuesday November 9 at 6pm.
