NUIG enjoyed a bounty of goals as the college’s 1sts and 2nds teams recorded vital victories at the weekend.
After a disheartening intervarsity tournament, the 1sts were eager to recover confidence, and they succeeded in style with a remarkable 6-0 win over tough opponents Greenfield 2nds in the Connacht League.
NUIG played a high tempo game getting quick ball into the forward line and midway through the first half Sile Johnson was set up to hit home, the first of the day after an impressive move which began with a skilful interception by vice captain Aoife Dervan.
Shortly after Rosie Shanahan doubled NUIG’s lead with a rocket of a shot in a penalty corner.
The second half saw the college girls raise their game another notch, which granted Orla Callanan plenty of opportunity to stick two more in the back of the net. Lisa Geraghty added her name to the score sheet with an impressive finish, and Johnson rounded up the day with another goal, leaving NUIG 6-0 up at the final whistle.
The 2nds followed with a match against Renmore 2nds, which turned out to be their best performance of the season, despite having only 10 players. Top scorer for the NUIG side was Aoife Roisin Burke, who secured four goals for her side. Rosie Shanahan dominated from centre back and added two goals to her tally. Fiona McGarry and captain Jenn Oakland also added a goal each for good measure. The Renmore goal by Ciara Bownes was a mere consolation to the losers, but to their credit, they never gave up.
