“Much still needs to be done for cystic fibrosis patients living in the Galway area,” said Fine Gael Senator Fidelma Healy Eames, who successfully completed the Dublin City Marathon on Monday in aid of Cystic Fibrosis Galway.
So far this year Senator Healy Eames has run one full marathon, one half marathon, and three mini-marathons for the charity.
Speaking about her involvement with fundraising efforts Senator Healy Eames said: “I was delighted to be able to run my first marathon for the Cystic Fibrosis Galway Hospital Project. I developed a bad knee injury four weeks ago and was afraid I wouldn't be able to finish on the day. I completed the run in five hours and 27 minutes. The reaction from the crowd was amazing. People cheered 'Come on Galway CF' the whole way around. The Oireachtas shirts with our personalised charities also worked a treat.
“I am now focused on completing my fundraising for CF. I know from talking to CF patients, their families and the committed organisers that any funds I can raise for this deserving cause will be well spent in our local unit. The plight of people with cystic fibrosis in Ireland has been well documented thanks to the bravery of many CF patients. It is disturbing to think that the poor services we have here mean the life expectancy for patients in Ireland is much reduced, compared with those living with the condition in other countries, including as near as Northern Ireland,” she said.
The senator welcomed the recent news that a contract has been signed for a CF unit at St Vincent’s Hospital, however she called on more work to be done for sufferers living in Galway and the west.
