A penguin sanctuary, which it is hoped will enhance the positive educational environment for visitors from home and abroad, will be a major part of the refurbishment plans for Galway Atlantiquaria, which has received nearly €700,000 in funding.
Minister for Social Protection Éamon Ó Cuív announced recently that his colleague, Mary Hanafin, Minister for Tourism, Culture, and Sport, has informed him that Fáilte Ireland has approved a grant of €672,500. The money will be used to enhance the existing visitor day attraction at Galway Atlantaquaria, located in Salthill, with the addition of a penguin sanctuary. The funding will also be used to refurbish part of the existing aquarium exhibit area.
Speaking about the funding, Minister Ó Cuív said: “The aim now is to re-invigorate the physical structure, introduce new technology and improve the building in a manner that benefits what is an already impressive structure.”
“Galway Atlantaquaria seeks to present a comprehensive view of the world of water through clear and interesting displays. It is a positive educational environment for visitors of all ages, from the west and beyond. While international and domestic economic factors are creating a challenging trading environment for the tourism sector at present, it is important that we continue to invest in our tourism product, so we can be best placed to take full advantage when more favourable economic conditions return.
“The funding of €672,500 will be put to good use and Galway Atlantaquaria is an example of an existing attraction which will benefit from funding for upgrading and development and which will further enhance the Galway tourism product on offer to visitors," said Minister Ó Cuív.
