Council should make contractors pay

Council should make contractors pay for damage to roads — Cuddy

Cllr Jim Cuddy has called on the Galway County Council to recoup the full amount of funding involved in the reinstatement of roads which are damaged as a result of heavy traffic relating to the construction of the new N6.

The Oranmore councillor is asking the local authority to ensure it is not left to foot the bill for damage caused by contractors.

“There is a lot of heavy goods traffic on the roads around the N6 construction sites, particularly on the Gurraun and Lisheenkyle roads, and to date Galway County Council have been footing the bill for ongoing repairs,” Cllr Cuddy said this week.

“I believe that the full cost of these repairs should be recouped by Galway County Council from the contractors building the new motorway.

“Galway County Council cannot continue repairing these roads at the expense of other roads around the county which are also in need of repair,” he warned.

“The council have scarce resources as it is and cannot continue with the regular maintenance required on these roads, which were never equipped to deal with these heavy volumes of traffic. These roads are being damaged by heavy goods vehicles working on the new N6 and the contractors are ultimately responsible.

Cllr Cuddy has placed a notice of motion before the local authority asking that the council ensure the cost of repair works to the roads are recouped from the contractors.

“I hope that the issue can be dealt with as quickly as possible,” he added.
