Gardaí have appealed to a driver, who may have witnessed the accident in which two French tourists lost their lives on Monday, to come forward.
Laurent Roy (49 ) and Claude Chanterault (67 ) are believed to have drowned when the car they were travelling in slid down an embankment into a river on Sunday. Two women, who had been back seat passengers in the car, were injured but their condition is not life-threatening.
The accident happened at around midday close to Tully Cross, on the beach road between the Lettergesh/Leenane road and the coast. Locals and coastguard personnel rushed to the scene to rescue the occupants of the silver Ford Mondeo after the accident. Despite efforts to revive the men, they were pronounced dead a short time later.
Gardaí have launched an investigation into the single vehicle collision, and have appealed to anyone who witnessed the crash to come forward. Gardaí have specifically asked the driver of a small, light blue sports utility vehicle, which may have been in the area at the time, to contact the incident room at Clifden Garda Station, phone (095 ) 22500, or the Garda confidential line at 1800 666 111.
