Museum hosts Community Outreach Intercultural Celebration

Children from several schools gathered at Galway City Museum on Tuesday for a fun day of story-telling, poetry, films, and music.

The Community Outreach Intercultural Celebration is an initiative supported by the JCSP Demonstration Library Project and the Home-School Liaison Team. It is aimed at supporting family literacy while celebrating inter-culturalism as part of social inclusion week in Galway. Galway Adult Basic Education Services, along with the Adult Refugee Programme has also taken an active part.

Three secondary schools and three primary school from across Galway city took part in the event which included story telling with Niall De Burca, music therapy with Eddie Lenihan and Edel Fox, and poetry with Gerry Hanberry. The children also enjoyed a performance with story, music, and song, as well as a film screening.

The event is also part of the Junior Certificate School Programme (JCSP ) which is running in several Galway schools and is based on the concept that all young people are capable of real success in school and that they can have a positive experience of school if the conditions are favourable. The JCSP libraries aim to provide welcoming, comfortable, and dynamic learning spaces.

Speaking about the event, Kathleen Moran, senior project librarian, JCSP Demonstration Library Project, said: “It was absolutely wonderful and will undoubtedly be an educational experience that the participating students will remember for the rest of their lives. And who knows, maybe the event has sown the seeds of inspiration for some future storytellers, musicians, and writers”.
