Ireland’s turbulent weather from summer 2009 to summer 2010, which saw floods, torrential rain, and severe cold, is examined in a new book to be launched in Galway this evening.
Deluge, Ireland’s weather disasters, 2009–2010 by Dr Kieran Hickey, and published by Four Courts Press, will be launched in Charlie Byrne’s Bookshop at 6pm.
This 140 page illustrated book deals in large parts with Galway city and county and on the devastating impact of the flooding on the environment and on the people of the west of Ireland.
Dr Hickey explains these events, the rarity of the occurrences, and their dramatic impacts. Consideration is also given to the role of planning process, the management of waterways, the role of local authorities, the response of the Government, and the legal situation regarding clean-up procedures.
The public is invited to the launch and signed copies by the author will be on sale on the night.
