Events for all the family at Coole

The Coole Park series of cultural events is now under way with a series of arts events beginning today (Thursday ) as part of the Winter Arts and Heritage Programme 2010.

Teatro ao Largo (Portugal ) will present Mighty Tales: The Acorn Man and The Tale of Francis Flute in Coole today from 8pm to 9pm. The Acorn Man is a folk tale with an ecological theme, told in rhyming verse and original songs, concerning the life of a humble shepherd who forested an entire mountain single-handed. Inspired by the popular tale 'The Man Who Planted Trees', the show is essentially a homage to old people and their value in society. The Tale of Francis Flute, based on a Portuguese traditional story, is a comic piece concerning the exploits of a harmless fool who is convinced that he is going to marry a beautiful princess. Despite her irascible father and the machinations of a gang of villainous palace guards, he achieves his aim. Both pieces are for audiences of all ages.

On Sunday October 24 Coole will host a family day with Nature Activities - Coole Trees in Winter: Explore Coole in early winter, from 2.30pm to 3.30pm. Activities for families include an outdoor walk and scavenger hunts. From 4pm to 5pm Cups & Crowns will perform Blenny the Waterdaughter. In a small fishing town off the coast of Ireland, Mack the lighthouse keeper watches over the town and the ocean, but feels part of neither. But that was before the day a blenny fish followed him home! This show is a captivating and enthralling tale which is skilfully unravelled by the storyteller who uses only herself and imaginary characters to bring you into Mack's world. Blenny the Waterdaughter is suitable for children over eight years.

The Reading and Understanding the Coole Landscape course is a follow on from similar courses of previous years. It offers a more detailed study into the landscape of Coole and environs. There is no lecture on Bank Holiday Monday but the course will continue on November 1.

All events in Coole Park Winter Programme are free. To obtain a programme or for further details on events contact Coole Park Visitor Centre at (091 ) 631804.
