Local coach operator Citylink has announced that is will cease to operate its Cork to Galway via Limerick route early next month.
The announcement came last week in a letter to the Department of Transport stating that the company was having difficulties competing with Bus Eireann, the state-owned company, on this route.
Claiming the decision was “difficult but necessary”, the company said the decision by the Office of the Revenue Commissioners to cease repayments of Mineral Oil Tax on diesel used in providing bus services (effective October 31 ) was also taken into consideration in the planned closure.
In the letter Citylink noted it had invested €3.5 million on new coaches in 2007 as an extension to its Dublin to Galway service but suffered continuous losses over the 18 months.
Citylink said it plans to continue to expand its current network of services which includes routes from Galway to Dublin airport, Dublin city, Shannon airport, and Clifden. The Citylink Cork to Galway route will cease operation on November 3.
