The trial of two Kenyan men accused of taking part in the murder of Galway-based photographer Trent Keegan has been adjourned in the capital city of Nairobi.
Muchiri Kariuki and Amos Kamau, who are in their 20s and 40s, are accused of assaulting and robbing the popular New Zealand-born photojournalist in the Kenyan city on May 28 when his badly beaten body was discovered in a trench. His camera gear, laptop, and mobile phone were missing.
The court was told last week that Mr Keegan, who had been working out of the African country since March, died after being hit in the head from behind. It is believed that the two men on trial were responsible for distracting Mr Keegan while a third party assaulted him. Mr Keegan’s family told the New Zealand press that the third man had not yet been apprehended and neither had pieces of their son’s camera gear and records which had gone missing on the night of his murder.
Mr Keegan’s family is said to be frustrated by the news of the adjournment, saying they know very little about the progress of the case. They said they believe their son was killed in connection with a story he was working on in Tanzania.
The trial is set to resume at the end of the month.
