Priest sexual assault trial deferred

The trial of a priest charged with sexually assaulting a 15-year-old boy on two separate occasions in the west of Ireland more than 40 years ago has been deferred.

The 82-year-old man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, had been extradicted from the US earlier this year and faces two counts of sexually assaulting the boy at two locations in 1968.

The Galway Circuit Criminal Court heard on Tuesday how the accused was currently in hospital due to ill health and that the trial was not in a position to proceed.

Judge Raymond Groarke adjourned the case to December 13 when a date is expected to be set for the trial.
