CIPD to hold symposium on foreign direct investment

A CIPD-organised symposium on foreign direct investment by multinationals in Ireland will take place in Salthill Hotel on October 29.

Ireland has been a major beneficiary of inward foreign direct investment (FDI ) by multinational companies (MNC's ). As FDI grew dramatically through the 1990s, MNCs were heralded as one of the principal reasons behind the country’s rapid ascent towards economic prosperity.

However, times have clearly changed and much of the recent media spotlight has focused on cases of MNCs closing or downsizing their Irish operations. However, concurrently some MNCs have increased employment while some new MNCs have also been attracted to invest in Ireland.

The symposium chaired by Bernard O’Hara (formerly Registrar at GMIT ) and guest speaker Prof Paddy Gunnigle, UL will address issues on MNCs in Ireland, the impact of the global financial crisis on IR/HRM, Findings in the Irish context on sub-national governance and HR; economic development policies and MNCs and the changing employee representation structures in Ireland. Each year this event is recognised as an important social event for all HR professionals, business owners, managers, supervisors, and academics and this year promises to be even more spectacular than previous years.
