Greenfields Hockey Club secured the points in this second fixture against local rivals NUIG at Dangan on Sunday.
Having battled last week to a 1 - 1 draw, both sides were deadlocked in the first half until Greenfields finished convincing 3 - 1 winners in the end, with Ireland u-17 soccer captain Dora Gorman proving an influencial player.
Both teams created a number of chances in an even first half. Orla Colleran and Amy Rossiter forced good saves from Greenfields’ Sinead Collins, while Mary Healy and Dora Gorman brought the best out of Meya Carpenter at the other end. But from the start of the second period Greenfields took the game to NUIG and were in front after five minutes.
From a short corner Neasa McGettigan supplied Collins who put Greenfields ahead, and they came close again when Alma Whelan shot narrowly wide after a great through ball from Gorman. However after 15 minutes their persistence paid off when Gorman, from another short corner, drew keeper Meya Carpenter and put the ball through her legs for an excellent goal.
NUIG tried hard to get one back over the next few minutes. Sheila Johnston forced a good save from Sinead Collins, but Greenfields finished with a third after a strong Aine Collins’ run found Dora Gorman whose shot was saved by Carpenter. However Alma Whelan was on hand to slam in the rebound.
NUIG were rewarded with a consolation goal after Aoife Roisin Burke supplied Amy Johnson who gave the keeper no chance.
Greenfields celebrate their 40th birthday this season with a special dinner in the Westwood on Saturday night. Tickets at €40 are available from club secretary Catherine Moore 087-2709145.
