Salthill u-16s win the county football title in style

Salthill-Knocknacarra had a big win, 2-14 to 1-05, over Corofin last Saturday in the county U-16 football final played at Tuam Stadium.

Brendan Kane was in charge of the city side and his team had some terrific individual performances in their ranks.

Brian Brophy between the sticks made two outstanding saves early in the first half that were to have a key bearing on the game. Corofin needed at least one of those efforts to raise a green flag to have any hope, as they were six points down at the interval.

Salthill’s Darragh Conroy was very solid at full-back and Ciarán Gaffney was outstanding at six. Kyle Tobin who only started due to injuries was fearless in defence and had a very fine game.

Up front Andrew Butler hit 1-02 from wing-forward and Seán Hughes was tremendous at full-forward hitting 1-07 off both feet from play.

The team captain was centre-forward Seanie O Leidhinn.

Nothing went right for Corofin on the day and losing full-back Cathal Reilly to injury in the first ten minutes was a mortal blow as they did not have the cover to contain a rampant Hughes.

Conor Cunningham tried hardest and Dylan Wall hit the side’s only goal.
