Portumna win first All Ireland Junior Cup

Portumna Golf Club has won the All-Ireland Junior Cup for the first time in the club’s history. Having They won Connacht in August at Castlebar GC, they returned to the same venue for the All-Ireland finals where they overcame Ulster champions Banbridge to advance to the final against Naas. Father and son John and Sean Cleary were the heroes on the first day, both coming from a deficit position to win their respective matches. And Pat Quinlan was the toast of the club the following day after the Clearys won their respective matches. Quinlan made sure of the trophy when he hit a tremendous four iron to 10ft at the difficult par three 16th to see off David Prendergast of Naas in the fifth and final match. The team was captained by Matt Donoghue.

• Four County Galway clubs are representing Connacht at the ILGU Inter-Club Matchplay finals at Donabate GC this weekend. First in action will be Galway Bay’s Helen O’Flaherty, Orla Shields, Aoife Killeen, Deirdre Toohey and Sheila Reilly v Moate in the intermediate quarter-final today, while Portumna GC Minor Cup district winners compete in their quarter final match v Hazel Grove, represented by Mary McDonagh, Mary Kelly, Loreto O’Grady, Mary McElroy and Audrey McGrath

Also competing in a quarter final on Friday are Mountbellew GC in the junior foursomes and the players who won the Connacht District final were Connie O’Brien and Kathleen Bergin, Siobhan Fallon and Caroline Delaney, and Mary Hyland and Kathleen Raftery. Tuam GC represents Connacht in the Junior Cup and play a semi-final match against Royal Belfast tomorrow, and the team comprises Anita O’Neill, Susan McGann-O’Brien, Marian Mulryan, Jacqui McGrath and Joan Tighe.
