First Mercedes-Benz SLS sold by Galway dealership

Galway dealership Cunningham Higgins has become the first in Ireland to sell the new Mercedes-Benz SLS.

Having just been launched worldwide, the 6.3 litre supercar with gullwing doors has features reminiscent of sports cars of the past, and one of the first right-hand-drive cars to be produced landed at Galway’s Mercedes dealership, Cunningham Higgins in Ballybrit.

Before delivery to its new owner, the car was displayed for two days alongside a 1954 Mercedes 300SL ‘Gullwing’ - an iconic sports car in its day. The viewing gave local enthusiasts a chance to see two extremely rare cars in the flesh.

Niall Cunningham of Cunningham Higgins says:“We were extremely lucky to secure the first SLS in Ireland, indeed the only one available to the Irish market this year, for our customer. Following a successful customer viewing of the car, we will be delivering the car to its proud new owner next week. Although not staying in Galway - the car is headed for Cork - we are delighted to have sold a car of this nature which hopefully signals a return of confidence in the supercar market in Ireland.”

Mercedes-Benz's sports car DNA dates back to the brand's early days. The first Mercedes was a sports/racing car. Built in 1901 by Wilhelm Maybach for race week in Nice, he promptly drove this pioneering car with its front-mounted engine to victory. In the decades that followed Mercedes-Benz racing cars achieved success after success. In 1952 the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL, as displayed in Cunningham Higgins last week, started to triumph around the world - from Le Mans and the Nurburgring to the Carrera Panamericana. The Gullwing marked a new pinnacle in the motorsport history of Mercedes-Benz, and also became a sports-car legend by virtue of its exciting design.

The SLS AMG represents the philosophy of Mercedes-AMG in its purest form. Specialising in unique, high-performance vehicles, the AMG performance brand was destined to develop this new, uncompromising super sports car. The overall concept and every detail reflect engineering expertise gained in more than 40 years of motor racing. Furthermore, the AMG Performance Studio, where the car is built, provides all manner of options for the SLS AMG to accommodate individual customer requirements at the highest level.
