View ageing as an opportunity, urges HSE official

An HSE West official is urging the public to celebrate the fact that people are living longer and to view ageing as an opportunity, not a burden.

Marie Prendergast, the HSE’s transformation development officer in Galway, was speaking in advance of Positive Ageing Week which kicks off tomorrow (Friday ).

The health authority is organising a number of open meetings to give people an opportunity to talk to health professionals who make up the primary care health teams locally and get advice on how to stay positive in older age.

The open evenings will be held at Tuam Library on Tuesday September 28, (times to be confirmed ), Clann Resource Centre, Oughterard on Wednesday 29 at 10.30am to noon and at Glenamaddy Social Services Centre on Thursday 30 from 10.30am to noon.

Positive Ageing Week, which is co-ordinated by Age Action, is a festival which highlights the positive aspects of ageing and celebrates the contribution older people have made and continue to make to their communities.

The central aim of Positive Ageing Week is to dispel the many negative perceptions that surround ageing and to transform attitudes towards ageing and older people.
