Notes for the season

Graduation day

All those sacrifices your parents made. Those years of commitment, the hard work, and the studying, the walking to class in the rain. The exams. Today is the day it all pays off. Today is graduation day. Today you get that dress. I mean, your degree. Today you get your degree.

We at Brown Thomas would suggest your dress has its own role to play on this important day. Photographs will be taken and history (family at least ) will be made. A little forward planning will go a long way. Book an appointment with a Brown Thomas stylist (ask for Noreen if you can get her ); it is a free service, with no minimum spend required, and let her do all the pulling, all you have to do is show up and try on looks until you are absolutely satisfied. Double book and bring your best friend or your mother. And remember come in with your heels and hair somewhat done, you will not get a true “read” on an outfit unless you are feeling good about yourself at that moment.

There is so much to choose from. For the brave, D&G does a fabulous satin mini dress with the most amazing lining. Dianne Von Furstenberg as always has a strong selection of special dresses, while Love Moschino’s collection varies from a sweet grey dress with collar to a fitted cobalt blue and black with fixtures that is only divine. Think outside the box. Try on at least one thing you would never wear. Be open-minded. Think Juicy Couture is all about loungewear? Think again. We are currently loving its simple clever little black dress with slightly puffy shoulders.

Faux fur is very in right now and looks well over almost all of this season’s outfits, Lipsy does an amazing spotted version that will amp up the glamour quota. You might want to browse Fen Wright Manson, it has a new range, FWM, that is full of surprises, consisting of a wonderful selection of understated dresses and blouses that are bang on trend and hugely wearable, and also affordable. Sarah Pacini is another designer worth bringing into the dressing room; with little hanger value, these pieces come to life when tried on.

Planning ahead includes your skin care too. When what you are wearing is sorted, come in and get a complimentary skin care analysis, all counters offer them. Clinique has an affordable three step skincare range that is worth sticking with before any big event. Then you can you think about cosmetics. MAC and other big houses will be booking early for makeovers, but if you talk to a consultant she can sit you down and work out what will suit you best on the day, working within your budget, advising you expertly what is essential and what is not.

Look amazing. Dare to be fabulous. It’s your day and you worked very hard to get here.
