Oughterard golfers win All Ireland Mixed Foursomes

Oughterard Golf Club: Oughterard is celebrating All Ireland success after winning the Irish Mixed Foursomes trophy. The Connacht champions defeated their Munster counterparts, Lisselan, by 3 - 2 at Castlerock Golf Club. In the semi-finals Oughterard scored a 3-2 win over the Ulster champions City of Derry, while Lisselan beat the Leinster champions, Clontarf, by 4-1.

The team was: Rita Jordan, John Carr (team captain ), Valerie Heary (team captain ), Jerry Gore, Maire Ni Mhaile, Catherine Hosty, Michael Darcy, Peter Feeney, Laura Gore, Ursula Hernon, and Mairtin O’Cearra.

In the final John Carr and Laura Gore lost 3/2; Mairtin O’Cearr and Ursula Hernon won 6/4; Michael Darcy and Catherine Hosty lost 4/2; Pete Feeney and Rita Jordan won 9/7; and Jerry Gore and Maire Ni Mhaile won 2/1.

Portumna Golf Club: Portumna won the Jack O Sullivan last Saturday after a 21 year lapse over Ballinamore Golf Club. One Portumna player can now boast to hold two Jack O'Sullivan medals as John Harte was a playing member of the victorious side in 1989 as well as on Saturday. The result was never in doubt as Portumna quickly amassed large leads in each match and were deserving winners 5/0 on the day to secure a 7/3 overall victory. The team was Lesley O Meara and Simon Lowry, John Harte and John Cleary, Ger Brehony and Brian Grogan, Brendan Naughton snr and Brendan Naughton jnr, Sean Cleary and Mick McGivern. Subs James Porter, Ray Lawless, Peadar Ryan and Mike Kiely. Team manager, Michael Carty, also played on the winning 1989 team.
