THE SOUNDS of American folk, roots, trad, and rockabilly will fill The Crane Bar during September with a host of gigs which are part of the Galway-Americana Festival.
Kicking off the Americana is The Unwanted who play next Wednesday at 9pm. The band is Dervish vocalist Cathy Jordan, solo guitar slinger, producer, singer and songwriter Shamie O’Dowd, and California folkie Rick Epping. The band play sean-nós, Appalachian, and contemporary folksong.
On Thursday 16, the incomparable Freddie White takes to the stage at 9pm, followed by a night of bluegrass with The Molly Hicks on Friday 17 at 9pm. The band are Ruth Dillon (vocals/guitar ), Bernie O’Mahony (vocals/guitar ), Tom Hanway (vocals/five-string banjo ), Peter Akerstrom (vocals/guitar ), and Paul Johnson (bass ).
When country met the blues it gave birth to rock’n’roll, and to rockabilly, and there will be plenty of good rockabilly when Joe Furey and the Hayride play on Saturday 18 at 10pm.
The great Mairtín O’Connor will be on stage on Sunday 19 at 6.30pm as part of Buffalo in the Castle.
Buffalo in the Castle is an exploration of music inspired by the traditions of Irish and American old-time music and song. Alongside Mairtín the line-up includes flautist Desi Wilkinson, vocalist and banjo player Lena Ullman, and fiddler Frank Hall, who is originally from Indiana.
