JOHN O’CONOR, one of the most respected and popular Irish classical musicians, and arguably this country’s leading pianist, is coming to Co Galway.
Mr O’Conor will play the Church of Ireland in Clifden on Friday September 24 at 8.30pm as part of the Clifden Arts Festival.
On the night he will perform Beethoven’s ‘Hammerklavier’ sonata in B flat Op 106; Chopin’s Berceuse Op 57, Barcarolle Op 60, and Chopin’s nocturnes C sharp minor Op 27 No 1, E minor Op 72 No 1, and E flat Op 9 No 2, and his Ballade No 1 in G minor Op 23.
Mr O’Conor has earned a reputation as a masterful interpreter of the Classic and Early Romantic piano repertoires. He has been praised for his formidable technique and through his eloquent phrasing, mastery of keyboard colour and, for his unique sound, he has been called a “poet of the piano”.
He has given concerts in Carnegie Hall and the Lincoln Center in New York, the Kennedy Center in Washington, the Wigmore Hall and South Bank Centre in London, the Musikverein in Vienna, and the Dvorak Hall in Prague.
As well as his recordings of Beethoven, Mozart, and Schubert, his recordings of the Irish composer John Field are equally acclaimed. His recording of Field’s Nocturnes featured on Billboard’s classical charts for many weeks.
