Ardrahan man warned by judge to stop getting shirty

An Ardrahan man who cannot seem to keep his shirt on or in one piece when out socialising has been ordered to stay away from Galway city centre pending the completion of a community service report.

If deemed suitable 21-year-old Wayne Sherry of Angelhaven, Carrarloggy, Ardrahan West, Co Galway, will be ordered to complete 130 hours of community service and if he fails to co-operate he could face the activation of a four months sentence.

Sherry was brought before Galway District Court on Monday charged with threatening and abusive behaviour and failing to provide his name and address at Rosemary Avenue, Eyre Square, on June 2, 2010, failing to appear in court on June 24, and with being intoxicated in a public place at Bruach Na Coiribe, Corrib River Walk, on September 6, 2010.

The court heard that on June 2 at 3.15am the defendant had his shirt off and was heard shouting and being threatening towards a large number of people in the area. Garda Brendan Owens demanded his name and address but Sherry fled from the scene.

In the early hours of last Monday morning Sherry was found wandering in an intoxicated state and wearing a torn T-shirt at Corrib River Walk. The defendant, who has previous convictions for public order offences, was then arrested and it was subsequently discovered that there was a bench warrant in existence for him.

Defence solicitor Sean Acton said that his client’s problems were alcohol related and that when he “binge drinks he seems to lose the ability to control his behaviour”. Mr Acton explained that on June 2, Sherry had been the victim of an assault and that he did not turn up for the court appearance on June 24 because “he was afraid of what would happen”. The court then heard that Sherry is normally very quiet when at home and that he lost his job as an apprentice plumber in 2008.

When Judge Fahy enquired as to the reason for Sherry being in the city centre this week she was told he had attended his brother’s birthday and that an altercation had occurred during which a family member was injured.

“You got convictions before. It’s time you took the head out of the sand and face up to things. He lost his apprenticeship but he still seems to have plenty of money for partying and drink,” said Judge Fahy, who warned that Sherry will be facing jail time if he does not co-operate with the court with regards to community service.

Sherry was remanded on his own bail of €200 to appear in court again on November 1 for a community service report. A bail condition was also set ordering him to stay away from Galway city centre pending the finalisation of these matters.
