Bow Waves Galway sailing and powerboat school is offering several marine navigation courses this winter including basic navigation, day skipper navigation courses, and Yachtmaster Offshore and Ocean navigation courses. The courses are for beginners to advanced sailors/boaters.
The two-day basic navigation and safety course is designed for all water users, from sailing, motor boating, and RIB driving, to sea angling, diving, and in-shore racing. It is an ideal first course to take, providing the essentials in basic safety and navigation. The course is ideal for those who do not necessarily want to be skipper, but who do want to get more involved in the running of the boat. The course is also a great refresher for those who completed a navigation course many years ago but who are now a bit rusty on some of the finer details.
The day skipper navigation is an evening beginners’ course run throughout the winter. This course assumes no prior experience and is intended to be both enjoyable and informative. It develops a recreational sailor's ability to skipper a sailing or motor yacht on coastal passages during daylight and at night. It introduces basic navigation including chart work, position fixing, tides, buoyage, and passage planning, as well as the essential subjects of safety and meteorology. The course is suited to both sail and powerboat users. The course is essential preparation for the day skipper practical course.
The Yachtmaster Offshore navigation course is also run in the evenings and is an advanced course in navigation and meteorology for candidates who wish to gain their Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster Offshore certificates. If however you are confident in your ability to skipper a boat and you consider that you have a good understanding of all the basics you could slot in at this level. The Yachtmaster Ocean navigation course will be run in Jan 2011.
Due to popular demand, Bow Waves’ dinghy sailing camp will also return for mid term break from October 25 to 29. Contact Cara to book your place early to avoid disappointment. Other upcoming courses include RYA first aid instructor course, RYA powerboat instructor course, elementary first aid, personal survival techniques, and personal safety and social responsibility.
