Jess Klein and Meg Hutchinson at The Crane

JESS KLEIN and Meg Hutchinson are two American singer-songwriters who have been winning the praises of music critics these last few years and both of them play The Crane Bar, Sea Road on Thursday October 23 at 9pm.

From Rochester, New York, Jess Klein picked up the acoustic guitar and started writing songs while living as a student abroad in Kingston, Jamaica in her late teens. Klein returned to the states, moved to Boston, and began performing locally.

After independently releasing her first two albums she signed to Rykodisc in 2000 and released Draw Them Near. In 2005 she moved to New York city and recorded the acclaimed album Strawberry Lover, which revealed in indebtedness to Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, and Patti Smith.

Later she explored 1960s Chicago blues from Buddy Guy, Junior Wells, Howlin’ Wolf, and Willie Dixon, and the results could be heard on her next album City Garden, which received five stars from Mojo. Klein now livers in Austin, Texas and is writing her next album.

Meg Hutchinson has been described as “a master of introspective ballads” by Performing Songwriter magazine. She was born in the small town of Great Barrington, Massachusetts and the nearby Berkshire Mountains, woods, and ponds have left a mark on her songwriting which often deals with nature.

Hutchinson has garnered much critical attention for her unique alto vocals and resonating, razor-sharp lyrics, and her sophisticated folk/pop songwriting has endeared her to such acclaimed songwriters as Susan Werner, John Gorka, and Catie Curtis.
