SELF HELP books have become like secular bibles for many people over the last 10/15 years, but one of the very earliest such books has inspired a new exhibition at the Galway Arts Centre.
Instantaneous Personal Magnetism, a new exhibition featuring seven artists, opens in the Galway Arts Centre on Thursday September 9.
The exhibition is named after a self help book by Edmund Shaftesbury published in 1926 by the International Magnetism Club. The book combines scientific theory with physical and mental exercises which aim to enlighten readers as to how they might “apply one’s personal energies so that they might become more magnetic”.
The exhibition which comprises of artworks ranging from sculptural objects, video, and paintings brings together the talents of seven artists; Sam Keogh, Eilis McDonald, Isabel Nolan, Ciaran Walsh, Linda Quinlan, Rory McCormick, and Shana Moulton.
Through their works the artists look at the different ways the self help movement has caught on. It also looks at magnetism, what it is, how some people have it, and others don’t. It also deals with the power and potential of cultural production.
The exhibition is curated by Padraic E Moore and runs until Saturday October 2. Admission is free.
