Galwegians kick start season with tag festival

Galwegians RFC season kicks off with rugby for all on Saturday (September 4 ) at Crowley Park.

The club has organised a Festival of Tag Rugby for everyone who is keen to stretch muscles and throw a ball around, and will include youth and senior players, coaches and anyone on the sideline.

Mini players aged 12 and under will kick start the festival at 10am, followed by youth players aged 13-19 at 11.30am.

The afternoon will see an adult festival kicking off at 2.30pm, and each team of 10 players must include at least three women.

A barbecue will be running throughout the day and refreshments are available. New players are encouraged to join in as the club continues to thrive. This year the club is keen to encourage new adult members, especially in the womens and men’s social sides where no previous experience is needed.

At underage level Galwegians Youth Academy boasts more than 400 players from six to 19 . Established more than a decade ago, the teams have celebrated Connacht League and Cup successes, while clubs from Leinster and Munster regularly look for games against Galwegians youth sides.

The senior men’s 1st XV will once again contest the All Ireland League division one B, and are set to be the first Connacht club to line out at the new Aviva Stadium when they take on Lansdowne on October 30. Plans are already under way to make it a day for the club to remember with a number of underage teams planning to play their Lansdowne counterparts.

In preparation for the league Galwegians are hosting the Defence Forces next Wednesday (September 8 ) with a 7pm kick-off, followed by their opening Connacht Senior League game against Connemara the following Saturday.

Stalwarts Ross Shaughnessy and Rob O'Beirne are expected to return from the USA, while the Sligo football season has delayed the return of Dave Clarke and Mark Butler. However last year’s Portumna star back row Dave O'Hara has impressed in pre-season friendlies and is set to play a dual role with Portumna and Galwegians.
