There have been fresh appeals for information in relation to an unidentified man whose body was discovered in a remote part of Connemara nearly four years ago.
According to the Searching for the Missing group there are now renewed appeals for anyone with information or who may have had contact with the unidentified man to come forward.
The man is believed to have been a German tourist who was visiting Co Galway in the summer of 2005 before going missing. The man’s remains, which lay undiscovered for over a year, were found on December 8, 2006, near Lough Inagh, a scenic and forested area nestled between the Maamturk Mountains and The Twelve Pins mountain range.
Searching for the Missing say that the deceased’s teeth yielded a number of clues as to his origin as well as a small bottle of Otrivine nasal decongestant and Labello lip balm which both featured German writing. The man’s Ray Ban sunglasses were also traced back to a location near Hamburg, however gardai are still unsure if the man is actually from that area, or had merely travelled through it at some stage. A carton of Tropicana Pink Grapefruit, found at the scene, gave a best before date of December 24, 2005, allowing gardai to roughly estimate the time of death.
Superintendent Tony O’Domhnaill of Clifden District HQ says that the man must have been in contact with a number of people during his visit to Ireland who may have information that will help the investigation. It is possible that the man would have travelled through Galway city at some stage before heading out on the N59 road towards the village of Recess, near Lough Inagh, or the man could have travelled south from Co Mayo.
“In particular I would appeal to owners of guesthouses, and bed and breakfasts. Did anyone leave personal documentation behind them when they stayed at your premises in 2005. Please study the image of the unidentified man, and contact us if you think he was in your locality. How did he get to Lough Inagh? Did he hitch a lift? We have a very good likeness of how this man looked, and I would urge every person to please study it and help identify this man,” said Supt O’Domhnaill.
