Colga FC, enjoying a memorable season, have the opportunity to add to their achivements when they take on Moyne Villa in the Galway & District League Cup final on Sunday in Terryland Park (3pm ).
The small south Galway club has already claimed the Umbro Irish Cup at this level, and last Sunday they won the u-16 league when they saw off Salthill Devon in Clarinbridge by 2 - 1.
Fom the start Colga pinned Salthill back, but they could not break through the strong Salthill defence until the final 10 minutes of the opening half. It took a long ball from Lisa Casserly to set up the opening score as Rachael Bannon collected, cut in from the side, and unleashed an unstoppable shot into the top left hand corner from 30 yards to make it 1 - 0 at the break.
Colga, who had started without regular goalie Saoirse Burke, who, along with some Salthill players, was in action for the Galway Football team, made a change at the break with centre forward Alana Moran going in goal.
Even against the breeze Colga continued to press forward, but Eleanor Stafford’s two efforts were just off target.
It took until the 35th minute of the second half for Bannon to make it 2 - 0. Straight from the kick off, Salthill put pressure on the Colga defence and were awarded with a free 35 yards out on the right. Grace O’Donnell hit a perfect shot into the top left hand corner with about four minutes remaining.
